Emmett Honeycutt

CHARACTER

Emmett Honeycutt is a fictional character on the Showtime original series Queer as Folk. He is among Michael Novotny's main friend group, and is particular closest to Ted Schmidt. Emmett is notable for his airy witticisms and flamboyant fashion sense. He has a wide variety of jobs throughout the series: working in a clothing store, becoming a porn star for Ted's website, running his own catering business, and delivering television news segments as the "Queer Guy."

APPEARANCE

& PERSONALITY

Although at first glance, Emmett seems to be a gay stereotype, even a stock character, throughout the five seasons his character becomes quite dynamic and complex. This complexity is enhanced by frequent anecdotes concerning his childhood in Hazlehurst, Mississippi. It highly implied he secretly like the athletic jocks in his school days...

Emmett is a swimmer build, standing approximately 5'11 with dirty blonde hair. As the series progresses, Emmett gains more popularity in the LGBT community from his frequency at Babylon, his tenure at Torso, his reputation as a pornstar, his event planning, his relationship with George Shickle, and becoming Pittsburgh's Queer guy. His admiration of Drew helped him explore the jock world as he began to read and talk football and drink beer surprising his group of friends.

Physically, He also becomes more subtly lean and attractive as series progresses leading towards the end of the series, he stands up to a protestant and fights back in surprise of his younger counterpart that was bullied.

Despite being treated poorly for long periods of time, and sometimes dark humor remarks, he is known for a certain integrity and decent moral upstanding. This shows particularly how he stands up for Ted's wrong-doing in Gus's college fund, how they didn't his sincere apology from it, and when he refused to have anything to have anymore meetings with Drew after he wasn't honest with him about where they stand.

BACKGROUND

Emmett grew up in Hazlehurst, Mississippi where he was the local "sissy" boy. Despite having a large family and many siblings, no one wanted anything to do with him due to his obvious preference for men. He would even assaulted by the local postman who would spit on him passing by. His only friend was his family member, Aunt Lula, whom would comfort him. He had an unknown lover in high school and lost his virginity when he was 15 years of age. When he reached his adult ages, he moved to Pittsburgh and was first roommates with Godiva until she became hospitalized from HIV. He was approximately 27 years of age when he moved in with Michael Novotny and they have been roommates for two years. He is an employee at Torso, and approximately earlier 29 years of age at the start of the story...

STORY

SEASON ONE

Emmett thinks this Japanese hustler is making romantic advances, however, his friends want to be sure what he is saying to him in Japanese and Melanie Marcus reveals to them that he expects Emmett to pay him for his services. Emmett later finds him with an older man with money while at Babylon.

When Ted goes into coma, Emmett is very distraught. He visits the hospital with the gang and meets Ted's mother. Knowing she will be there to get Ted's things, Michael and Emmett hide all the lude sexual innuendo things that Ted owns. They discover a shine with Michael implying ted has harbored emotional feelings for Michael.

Emmett, once again, is impressed with Michael taste in men, and as a men's apparel professional, he helps him dress for his date with David Cameron. he later meets David when Michael takes him to Woody's one evening saying "Hello Gorgeous." David remarks on his flamboyance, but Michael assures him that he was toning it down for him.

Emmett goes with Ted to get tested for HIV. Emmett originally does it for moral support despite always having safe sex, however, a voicemails comes on a Friday saying they are requesting him to report to office for an issue. This alarms him to thinking he maybe positive. He tries to confide in Vic Grassi, Michael's uncle, while at Michael's 30th birthday party. Emmett makes a promise to God that if he was negative, he would never sleep with another man again.

Emmett's test comes out negative and he attempts to live up to his promise to God despite all temptations. Emmett meets a conformed man named Matt, and is invited to a group called "See the light" which has a Christian foundation. Michael and Ted Schmidt noticing the difference in him, decides to hire one of his favorite porn stars to get him back to being himself. Despite him being floored by Zack O'tool coming to his apartment personally and offering his body, he politely declined feeling like he can overcome any temptation.

Emmett begins to date a lesbian woman named Heather and they become determined together to see the light and get a success story for the group. After several efforts, they have sex. However, when they do have sex, Heather thinks of the hottest woman while Emmett is thinking of the hottest male figure to get aroused and have sex with each other. Before the session begins of "See the light", Michael and Ted, tell him that they love him and support him as friends in whatever he decides to do. Ted, in particular, is very upset and distraught and claims that God made and is proud of Emmett just as he is. Heather overhears and appears as emotional.

While Ted struggles with his affections for Blake Wyzecki, Emmett originally is protective over him. Emmett goes as far as to tell Blake that if he hurt Ted, he will break his face. Emmett accompanies Ted to the hospital for Blake as well as taking him out for lunch when Blake is recovered and working with Melanie Marcus. As Blake struggles with addiction, Emmett suggests he tell him to either change the locks on his condo and forget about him or make him go to rehab. When they go to see how Blake is doing, they find out that he has left leaving ted devastated. Emmett comforts Ted over losing Blake.

SEASON TWO

After Michael moves to Portland to be with David, Emmett looks for roommates to replace him only to end up hooking with them instead. he and Ted are overjoyed to see Michael has come back, but sad to hear the relationship didn't work out between him and David. Emmett welcomes him back to their apartment.

Emmett takes a server and domestic maid job besides his job at Torso. Subsequently, he begins watching a series called "Gay as Blazes" which portrays as clean cut positive image of homosexual men. He meets clients who are much like the characters from the series. Despite what the series says initially, Emmett notices their sexual advances towards them to not be outright, but subtle and even manipulative and demeaning. Emmett realizes that people like this are out to question his intelligence and resigns. At the same time, he stops watching 'Gay as Blazes' as well.

Ted, struggling to start his new porn business, throws Emmett out of desperation since Zack O'tool failed to show up, however, the fans love him because he is bigger than O'tool and he is later named "Fetch Dixon" as a pornstar jerker. Amongst many crazy gifts, letters and lude offers, he stumbles on a watch of real goal from a secret admirer in George Schickle, a wealthy old man who owns Schickle's Pickles, a pickle company. One day, while talking to Debbie Novotny, he is picked up by a limo and taken to a huge mansion. He meets George, but is insulted as he treats him like a hustler at first and Emmett leaves. George tracks him down at the apartment, and apologizes to him.

George and Emmett

They begin to date and fall in love despite their significant age difference. Emmett takes George to his first time at babylon where he meets the rest of the gang and ultimately liked by each due to Emmett's adoration in description of them as his friends. After not attending for a long time, George takes to Emmett to the opera where they meet up with Ted and George's ex wife, Virginia, to his dismay. Virginia begins to gets condescending to the couple which Emmett in defense says something to cleverly offend her when it comes to "keeping a man" leaving her shocked which greatly relieved and humored George.

With Emmett at first wanting to help Lindsay and Melanie on his own for their wedding, is persuaded by George to use an event room in his mansion for their wedding. They were charmed by George on their first meeting and through him and Emmett, they had a blissful wedding day with all their friends.

George suffers heart attack and dies on the eve of a six-month tour of the world with Emmett leaving him devastated. Emmett attempt to go to the funeral, accompanied by Ted, only to be escorted out by security from Virginia's order. Having been escorted out, he can not revealed that he was George's young male lover and known to them as a man who hustled a lonely older man. Emmett later is recognized and nominated for being a porn star and he gives his emotional speech to George as inspiration with the audiences applauds.

Later, Emmett is shocked and touched when he learns that George has left him a significant amount of money, but is heartbroken to find out that he can only claim it if he publicly denies his affair with George. Emmett gives up the money, because he wants the world to know how much he truly loved George.

After Emmett feels like he let the team down in bowling, Ted cheers him up and starts to feel a certain way towards him. In sometime, Ted being to act weird around him and he confides in Melanie and Lindsay which they believe Ted likes Emmett more than his best friend. After a few nights out, Emmett declines, but tries to cheer Ted by compliments when he sees him at Babylon. While Emmett compliments him, he hesitates in every compliment as he finds everything he likes in a man in his own best friend and they embrace and kiss passionately.

SEASON THREE

Emmett and Ted become a couple and find out how opposite they can be. Despite them loving each other, they have issues when it comes to housekeeping which Emmett moves out briefly. Ted apologizes and suggest to them that they buy a house. They later hire Jennifer Taylor to help them find a home, and have issues on types of houses which Emmett likes an older country home and ted likes a more modern style home. Just when Emmett gives up, and decides to "count his blessings" and go with what Ted wants, Ted has already decided to go with the house Emmett wants greatly pleasing him in front of the gang celebrating.

They move into a country house and attempt to live in a domestic partnership. They meet the neighbors next door. They meet a lady next door named Sunny whom invites them to a party which make Ted and Emmett feel very uncomfortable being the only gay couple in the neighborhood. At the party, the police come and ask for Ted and he is being arrested for his website violation(s) as part of the Jim Stockwell raid on LGBTQ community. Emmett goes to Brian Kinney for help and pleads him.

Ted begins to despair and get hooked on drugs causing more strain on their relationship. Emmett becomes a planner like he desired making Ted feel emasculated. Ted grows envious of Emmett's success, and starts to self destruct himself in pity. He begins doing crystal, going to drug party even taking money from friends. Emmett finds out he has used the money given to him to save for Gus's college fund, confronts him and replaces it with money he has saved. When Ted goes to Melanie and Lindsay's house to apologize, Emmett supports him. Melanie and Emmett have an argument when Melanie doesn't accept his apology and harsh words were exchanged.

Emmett tries drugs with him just so Ted wouldn't feel alone and judged, but has the opposite affect he intended. Ted condescendingly persuades Emmett to throw him a party for him and his friends one evening while he is high on crystal. Emmett throws it, but leaves seeing how it isn't the party he intended to host. Emmett stays at Michael's for the night and wakes in a bad mood and says "Where's a chiropractor when you need one?" and then apologizes not meaning to bring up Michael's ex boyfriend up.

Emmett goes back to the apartment to talk to Ted who has hit rock bottom with drugs. They argue. Ted saying terrible things towards Emmett, and Emmett retaliating with the truthfulness of his circumstances. Emmett tries to reason with him, even sobbing, and Ted resolved with illusions of the drugs kicks Emmett out. They ultimately have a disastrous breakup leaving Emmett devastated. Emmett goes to Hunter's party hosted by Michael upset and devastated. Melanie and Lindsey overhear him and Michael talking and offer him to stay with them. Emmett makes up with Melanie and they take him with them.

SEASON FOUR

Emmett visit Ted in rehab. He sees Blake again with him there. After an all around upsetting encounter, not only seeing Ted get defensive over what he says, but some jealously of Blake, he leaves. Emmett picks up his things from Ted's house and is scared to see Ted actually there. Ted still in despair, but Emmett not longer feels remorse and bluntly tells him if he feels that way he should kill himself. He leaves and slams the door behind him.

Emmett still hurting from the breakup with Ted, goes on a retreat with Michael for healing. At first, feeling to depressed, he doesn't interact well in the retreat. However, after talking with a member that knows his pain, Emmett's flame comes back to life and he embraces his experience in the retreat.

Emmett is still resentful of Ted hurting him, and gets upset that the gang is supporting him. He gets upset at Melanie and Lindsay for baking cookies for him, and mostly Michael feeling like he has betrayed him for Ted and they have a disagreement with Emmett saying unkind remarks and walking off. Brian isn't happy seeing Michael upset over something he can't help, and reasons with Emmett about trying to make Michael choose sides. Emmett comes over and converses with Michael letting know there is no hard feelings.

Emmett starts dating and hooking up again. He brings a howling trick to Melanie and Lindsay's house waking them up. Lindsay up feeding Gus when Emmett comes to the kitchen. She makes a remark on a howling noise that woke her and Melanie up in the middle of the night knowing he brought someone to their house. Before Emmett could apologize, she says she hopes he does it again just not here. This is where she suggest that getting his own place wouldn't be so bad.

Atlas, Emmett has gain complete independence. He takes Michael and Brian to see his place looks like Brian's except plainer. Later, He has a trick over whom, inadvertently, enlightens him on his very own situation about preference to living with someone. Emmett starts to visit Debbie, to her delight after being lonely and they discover they have more in common in friends than they initially thought. To Debbie's delight, Emmett suggest they live together, and she instantly moves him into Vic's old room.

Ted visits Emmett while living with Debbie and find him painting her front door. The talk cordially, but with Emmett being somewhat snarky especially considering he was the last person he gives his amendment letter to. Still angry, and rationalizing that they letter was to make him feel better, and not truly acknowledge the pain done, Emmett rejects the letter hurting ted even more. Another day, Blake comes back and cordially talks to Emmett; more pleasant conversation then their past. Blake assures Emmett that his letter is to address a certain pain he feels for hurting Emmett. Emmett takes it, and reads it several days later on his downtime. Emmett stops by Ted's house and admits that part of him didn't want him to recover, but suffer, because of how much hurt he caused him. Emmett also commended Blake on being a very good counselor and friend. Before leaving, Emmett wishes him good luck.

At Debbie's Christmas party, Ted and Emmett become more friendly again and remind each other of their friendship through a drink and celebrate Vic's memorial "Christmas" party with the gang. Emmett not only misses Vic's friendship, but he's also missing a huge part to his event planning business, a caterer. Through Debbie's suggestion, he recruits the drag queen, Darren, whom was previously bashed since he broke some of his apparel practicing for his next show.

On a catering gig, he meets Pittsburgh Ironmen quarterback Drew Boyd. After Drew makes some homophobic remarks to him and his friend, Darren, and Emmett confronts him and saying he has a lot to learn about being a man since he didn't say those remarks to his face, but behind his back. When Emmett drops by Drew's house to pick up his paycheck, Drew becomes aggressively flirtatious and he and Emmett have sex on the floor.

Although Drew is engaged to a woman, he and Emmett begin an on-again/off-again relationship. Due to his growing admiration for Drew, Emmett begins to read about football, drink beer, and even talk football surprising his group of friends.

During one of their encounters, Emmett brushes the idea of him doing modeling shots for advertisement and tells Drew to pose while Emmett pretends to do his picture. Initially, Drew was opposed to the idea, but because of Emmett, he saw the brighter side. Ted later says that Drew Boyd agreed to shoot with them for the Brown's Athletic Advertisement.

Drew and Emmett began a down-low affair despite he was engaged to Sierra. They would meet three times a week in a hotel. One day, Drew kissed and cuddled with him. Emmett is present at a football game (which Ted insisted he attend) and they are seen by Sierra and she insist that he and his friends come to say hello to Drew. Sierra presents Emmett to Drew, and Drew gives off an awkward look and says excuses them from the group kissing Sierra in front of Emmett; which is a painful moment for Emmett starting to have feelings for Drew.

He is later stood up by Drew in the hotel room making due while being inwardly distraught of his absence. Later, There is a Black SUV near the house worrying Debbie which she says she is going to call Carl. Despite the situation, He smirks knowing she has won Carl over and proceeds outside to walk into town. He discovers it is Drew undercover and he initially doesn't accept his association after not showing up or calling. he gets in the car eventually to here Drew's excuses and then acknowledging that he misses him. They go out, but Emmett finds out that he bought the place out so that they couldn't be seen together.

Emmett asks him where they stand and Drew refusing to give up his life says, "Nothing has to change between them." as he wanted a life and kids and doesn't want to loose his passion; football. Emmett struggles, but find it in him that he deserves better and leaves him in the hotel.

Having mended their friendship, Emmett confides and tells Ted that Drew and him have been having an affair. Ted, initially in disbelief, is shocked to here the news and knows now how he landed a model for the Brown Athletics account. While talking, Ted expresses subtle hints of jealously of two things; Emmett attracting a hot man like Drew and that regret of losing Ted to someone. Ted perseveres and comforts Emmett from his loss.

Ted comes to the house and gives Emmett the $5,000 he owed him from when he paid covering Ted taking Gus's college fund. Ted tell Emmett he won't be attending due to the lack of support and the triggers that will be present on the Liberty Ride 2004. Emmett attempts to change his mind by buying clothes for the trip and tell him that he is going to attend. At the very last minute, Ted comes in a taxi and stops the bus as it is about to pull off. He attends as Emmett knew he would.

Emmett and Ted comfort each other throughout the trip. Ted is crying and feels regret when Michael and Ben get married knowing that if he hadn't made mistakes, it could have been him and Emmett. Emmett cheers him up saying that their friendship last longer than most marriages. They get lost while trying to find a support place for Ted, they quarrel a little before coming to terms again, Ted gives his speech to livestock and counts his blessings. Then, the next morning they find the other bicyclist and continue on the way making it back to Pittsburgh.

SEASON FIVE

When his wife discovers the affair, she leaves him and Drew turns to Emmett for solace. He comes out to the public by sharing a controversial on-air kiss with Emmett, causing each of them to lose their jobs. Their relationship ends bitter-sweetly when Emmett sees him kissing another man and concedes that, as a man newly out of the closet, Drew needs the time and freedom to sow his oats.

Last Episode

In the series finale Emmett meets an old crush from Hazlehurst, Captain of his old high school swim team. At the ending of the episode we see Emmett dancing with this crush, possibly meaning they are dating.

RELATIONSHIPS

TED SCHMIDT

Emmett is possibly to closest main character to Ted Schmidt. Despite coming from nearly completely different worlds, they are best friends from the beginning of the series and are very complementary towards each together.

After ted loses his career, Emmett helps Ted with his porn website as one of the jerkers. At the end of the second season, he becomes romantically involved later in the series. The relationship is short-lived, however, as Ted faces serious problems with drug addiction that place enormous strain on him and Emmett. After subtle struggle, they repair their friendship and embrace it.

Together, they displayed an undefeatable loyalty friendship commonly portrayed in many LGBTQ despite challenges they face.

MICHAEL NOVOTNY

He and Michael are close friends. He becomes Michael roommate two years prior to the story and best friend as an adult Emmett always has supporting word for Michael considering his apparel, moral support and guidance, and relationships with David and Ben and considers him to have has excellent choices in men.

DEBBIE NOVOTNY

She is closest with Emmett more than Michael's other friends. Debbie and Emmett share a natural close bond being that he is more of a flamboyant gay, and she is very outspoken about gay rights and very family orientated within the LGBT community.

Their friendship is endearing as they share many light hearted jokes as well as lighting up darker humor ones. Emmett will often talk to her concerning dreams, jewelry, television shows, Michael, their man and many more topics. Since Michael and Justin move out, and Vic passes away, Emmett later moves in with Debbie due to them rather living with someone then alone.

BRIAN KINNEY

Emmett and Brian are pretty solid friends. They are not too close, but not distant either. Emmett is quick witted and has thick enough skin to handle Brian's darker humor jokes and doesn't take them seriously while Brian pokes funs at Emmett not meaning harm, although, he falls victim to his darker pranks often making the general friend group disappointed and angry.

As they get to know each other more through the series, they become better friends. However in serious times, Brian is key for him getting over ted when he is falling into bad drug habits, helping him realize he is making Michael take side between him and Ted and preventing it, as well as helping him to not be naïve about the television career he gains and the image of him as "Queer guy" is sexless.

DREW BOYD

When his wife discovers the affair(s), she divorces him and Drew turns to Emmett for solace. Later, Drew finds Emmett after he has well gotten over him. Drew has encountered a fan whom he had sex and had a hidden camera and bribed him for money. Having told Sierra what was going on, she divorces him and news spread throughout the city about the allegations and even untruthful rumors. He seeks out Emmett and asks for his advice which Emmett tells him the best solution is to come out and announce who he is and accept himself.

On live TV, where Emmett is working as a Queer guy, they do an interview with Drew and he announces that he is gay and goes on to thank Emmett for encouraging him to be his own man. He kisses Emmett on life TV shocking the news cast and viewers. This also gets Emmett terminated from the News cast as they now see that he is not sexless and his sex life is actually beyond their minds to be a football star they viewed as a hero.

Emmett later takes Drew with him to Babylon like in his imagination in prior episode, but leaves him alone when he goes to get drinks for everyone. When coming back from getting drinks, Emmett gets jealous when he finds Drew kissing another man and refuses to talk to him. He later comes to his senses when he talks to Debbie Novotny that he was once a curious young gay thing at one time as well. Emmett has a talk with Drew and as much as it was hard to let him go, he realizes that Drew has to explore the gay life himself before he can steadily commit. Drew never meaning any harm doesn't disagree, but is saddened by Emmett's departure.

George Schickle George was Emmett's boyfriend for the second season.

JUSTIN TAYLOR

Emmett is more nurturing towards Justin since the first episode when he is discovering who he is. When he outs Chris Hobbs to the viewers on Liberty Avenue, he says, "You go baby." and kisses him on the side of the head. They share a fun loving friendship where they make light jokes towards each other.

VIC GRASSI

Amongst Michael's group of friends, Emmett was probably closest to him.

At one time, Emmett freaked out thinking he was HIV positive and confides in Vic. Another time, Emmett tries to help Vic find the courage to defend himself against an unfair charge by telling him this untrue story that could prove a true perspective in order to get him to fight back. Later in the series, he is the main cook when Emmett becomes an event planner. Emmett is saddened when he passes away and comforts Debbie as he began to live with her in place of him.

LINDSAY PETERSON

They bond as they share the feminine qualities and interest. Lindsey even calls Emmett for assisting her in his event planning during the third season.

MELANIE MARCUS

Despite being so different, they have a fun loving friendship. They playfully tease each other, and have great laughs. Melanie also defends him in his lawsuit when George's family tries to take his inheritance.

The biggest fall out they've had was when Emmett supported Ted in telling the truth about Melanie and Lindsay's finances which an angry Melanie lashed out on Emmett calling him a "silly faggot" which he was greatly offended and retaliated in calling her a "cunt" unforgivingly. They later make up when Ted kicks him out and has nowhere to go. Melanie then apologizes, tells him she admires how he stood up for his partner, and lets him stay with them. They keep a great friendship as the series progressed. at an opening of the art gallery which was a great success.

BLAKE WYZECKI

At first, Emmett harbors dislike Blake because he feels he doesn't have Ted's best interest. How Emmett treats Blake is common amongst some of the dark humor in local bar scenes of the LGBT community.

Emmett confronts him in the first seasons saying if he hurts Ted, he will hurt him. In later season when ted was in rehab, he attempts to insult Blake who was a drug counselor, and leaves out of jealousy with the thought of them together. After Emmet not accepting his letter of amends, Blake brings the letter to him explaining the motive. After this, Emmett starts to respect Blake more.

Having reconcile his long-standing friendship again with Ted in the final episodes, Blake comes after Ted make his birthday wish. Emmett and Blake greet each other warmly. After both act timid about spending time together, Emmett pushes them together knowing how they feel about each other.

SIERRA

She at first is pleasantly acquainted with Emmett having setup a few food functions for her. She insist the gang says hello which Emmett reluctantly goes knowing there will be awkward moments. Emmett is possibly jealous after the football game when Drew doesn't acknowledge him kisses her directly in front of him, but knowing it's not her fault. During the time of Emmett and Drew are having an affair, she doesn't know anything, however, if she saw the on air kiss with him and her ex husband, Drew, on Live Television, she would possibly put the pieces together and their friendship would possibly be dissolved.
